You Don't Have to Spend a lot of Money...
In 2008 we saw a serious economic downfall and the financial outlook for 2010 doesn't look any better. That being said, we have to be smart about where we spend our money but make no mistake... You have to invest in your health. This could mean signing up for a gym membership, purchasing healthier foods, setting aside time to exercise, or subscribing to an online diet program to help meet your goals.
Let's Get Started!
Let's grab a piece of paper and something to write with. We need to put together a blue print to map out your weight loss goals for 2010. Ready? Here we go...
Be Realistic - Achieving health and a desirable weight will be a continuous quest. This is not a race so try not to put too much pressure on yourself by doing too much too soon. Setting unrealistic expectations will increase the chance of frustration and ultimately failure. Make a note to start slow and gradually increase your expectations over the course of this year.
Set Short-Term Goals - So what would be an ideal short term goal? Here are some ideas to get your wheels spinning.
- Lose first 10lbs-15lbs by May 2009
- Replace sodas with low calorie drinks (such as Crystal Light) for 2 weeks
- Reduce eating fast food by 45% for 1 month.
The idea here is to make small gradual changes that will add up to big results overtime.
How About Variety? - A lack of variety can make any diet extremely miserable. If you have a membership with a gym or health club, look into the classes and programs they offer to mix things up every so often. If not, then think about physical activities (for exercise) that you really enjoy doing. Write these activities down so you can have a list to choose from. Even performing household chores ( if done with energy and purpose) can be considered exercise. Here are other ideas of physical activities
- Run the stairs at work
- Park further away when you're out and about
- Good old fashioned push-ups and sit-ups at home
Make Time for Yourself - I find this step very difficult for people to manage. Time is very precious. Everyone has busy schedules. Long hours at the office, kids, family... Many of us often put others needs before our own but here is the truth. We shouldn't feel guilty for taking care of ourselves. If you want to have optimal health, then you have to make time. I find its easiest to make time for yourself if you plan in advance. List all of your weekly activities and see where you can find some "you time". After you schedule your time, commit to it.
Start Today - Don't procrastinate starting on your journey to healthier and happier living. Make a commitment to start making small changes today!
Visit Your Doctor - This is the most critical step of this entire process. Before you start working towards your weight loss goals you should schedule an appointment with your doctor to ensure you are clear to lower your caloric intake and increase your physical activity. What better time to do this than during the new year!
