What’s Your Reason This Season?
If you are like many people across the world, you are planning a New Year’s resolution to begin in just a few days. And if you are like thousands of others, it probably has something to do with weight loss. And, if you’re like most of them, you’ve probably done this before, and at some point a few weeks into the year you’ve given up in hopeless frustration. Why is it so hard to stick with our plan to lose weight? One reason might, of course, be the plan itself. Another reason to consider–maybe it wasn’t so important for you to lose weight.
Think about that. In what way do you believe your life will change if you lose weight? Maybe you know you will look better and feel better and wear sharper clothes and be able to exercise more and perhaps you will feel more attractive, more youthful, more like you want to. But when the smell of freshly baked cookies comes wafting through the air, or the waiter brings the dessert tray around to your table, or you drive up to the fast food window and see the supersize special …. what is keeping you from ordering the cookies, cakes, and fries? That non-specific idea of ”something better” in the future just doesn’t do it!
This year, make it different. Sit down right now and make a list of reasons why it’s important for you to lose weight. And after you have that ho-hum vague list that says, “feel better”, “look better”, “be more healthy” and “be able to move around better”, look at it again. Break each one down two to three times, asking yourself “why is this important to me”?
Why do you want to feel better? Why do you want to look better? You look good enough already. They make nice clothes in your size. What’s really so important that it will get you to pass by the muffin shop in the mall or the vending machine at work? Perhaps getting off your medications and avoiding insulin injections does it for you. Or attracting that new handsome fellow’s eye at work. Maybe showing up looking hot at your reunion in June is something you can start working on now instead of in March. Do some soul searching and some honest self-questioning to figure out why it’s a really big deal for you to shed some pounds. If it’s not important it’s not going to happen. If you can’t think of a great reason, you might as well just rephrase your resolution to volunteer at a children’s hospital, spend more time with your relatives, or donate to the needy. Why waste your time struggling with something that isn’t important when you could be helping someone else!
