Spray Away the Calories

spray-butterIf you haven’t tried some of the products you can spray on your food to save calories, I am here to tell you about two I use faithfully, and one I just found out about.

First, my favorite:  spray butter.  It is a fantastic idea!  It’s not necessarily all that different in composition than other spreads you might use for your bread, potatoes, or pancakes.  But the fact that you spritz out droplets that cover a large area without having to melt gobs of a more solid product onto your food—that’s calorie saving.  Just one teaspoon of butter has 45 calories.  It’s hard to melt that into an English muffin full of nooks and crannies, or spread it alll over a soft roll without tearing the bread.  “I can’t believe it’s not butter” spray has less than one calorie in five sprays.   Even if takes you 20 or 30 sprays to cover your entire bagel in the morning, it’s not more than 5 or 6 calories.

salad-spritzersMy second favorite is spray salad dressing.  Again,  not a new formula or magic recipe is behind all the calories you will save.  It’s a matter of being able to completely cover all the veggies on your salad without having to pour nearly half a cup of dressing over the bowl.   If you use two tablespoons of a light dressing you still get 80 calories (and probably only half of your salad gets dressing on it).  Wishbone salad spritzers come in several tasty varieties and add only 15 calories for every 10 sprays.  Spray away and get flavor in every bite while saving up to hundreds of calories depending on your current dressing habits.

pam-bakingThird, here is a new product I just found out about: Pam Baking.  By the makers of Pam sprays, this contains both the non-stick light oil you’ve come to know and love for cooking, with real flour.  Just what you need to cover a baking pan when making cakes, muffins, and other recipes that call for you to “grease and flour” the pan.  At “seven calories per second” sprayed, you can easily cover the pan in 10 seconds and that’s just 70 calories.  Compare this to a few tablespoons of butter or crisco at over 100 calories a tablespoon, a greasy mess on your hands, and shaken flour all over the counter and floor (at least the way I used do it!).

Try these new spray products to save calories and fat in your diet.  They taste good, cover all your food with flavor, and can play an important role in helping you make healthy changes in your diet to lose weight.  Let me know what you think!
