Answer:

Dear Linda,

It’s very difficult for me to give you advice on how you can lose weight, since I know nothing about what lead to your weight gain.  You, however, do know what has changed in the past six months that has lead to weight gain!

Take a look at what you’ve been doing differently and try to get back to doing what worked before that kept your weight where you liked it.  Have you been less active?  Snacking more?  Eating out more?

For starters, focus on eating foods that we all know are “good for you” like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy products. Sometimes when we get enough of these wholesome foods in our diet, we’re not craving the fatty, sweet, and salty foods that just add calories without nourishing us.

As for the exercise, it can be as simple as walking an extra mile a day–which only takes most people about 20 minutes–to help the weight come off.  If you want to track your activity, find an inexpensive pedometer and record the number of steps you take each day.  The ultimate goal is to get  in 10,000 steps a day, but if you find your activities leave you with a much lower number (like 2,000 to start with), just make small advances by trying to increase your steps by 500 or 1000 each day, one week at a time.

Eventually you’ll find the balance of increasing activity, while reducing empty calorie intake, that will lead you back to the weight you want to be.

Good Luck!
