ATD: Is The Acai Berry Flush Good To Jump Start Your Diet?

<br>

Question:

I have heard that the acai berry flush is a good way to jump start your system; is it safe? Yolanda

Answer:

Dear Yolanda,

The acai berry achieved its great reputation a few years ago as one of several ’superfruits”, loaded with antioxidants.  These compounds are known to be good for keeping cells healthy and having protective effects against chronic diseases and some types of cancers.

Beyond that, the acai berry itself has no magic healthful properties.  Furthermore, the berry–grown in South America–cannot be imported into this country (as is true for many types of foreign produce) so in the States we get ‘extracts’ and ‘powders’ and other forms of ‘supplements’ in over-the-counter potions and formulas that tout the wonders of acai berries, targeting hopeful buyers who want to lose weight, increase stamina, cleanse their system, etc.  Since these extracts are not in the form of either a drug or a food, the FDA has no regulatory powers over their sales, or their claims.  There are no reputable studies to prove that any of these products do the least of what they claim.

Cleanses or de-toxing products usually contain some type of a harsh laxative to make the user feel like their system is purged.  In reality, you lose water through your intestinal tract, the results of which can range from discomfort to serious dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.  There is no reason for anyone to ‘cleanse’ their system (that’s what your liver, kidney and intestine does, 24 hours a day) and there is no guarantee that any of these products are safe.
