ATD: Which Diet Plan is the Best?
Question:
I want to know the fastest, safest and best diet I can use to shed about 40 pounds. I see you have reviewed lots of diets but I want to know the best diet out there. I do not have any health problems. Thanks, Sharon
Answer:
Dear Sharon,
It certainly is helpful to note you have no health problems, so you don’t need any special diet restrictions. Since that is all I know about you, however, I cannot recommend the plan that is best for YOU! The reason there are so many plans out there is because something different works best for each individual. Some people like to be told exactly what to eat at each meal, and others like a plan with a lot of choices; some people want a meal replacement drink or bar so they never have to think about what to eat and others like to know what they can have from a restaurant that will fit into their plan; some people are really into exercise and others want nothing to do with it. You can see how difficult it is to recommend the best plan for any one person.
Seeing a registered dietitian at a local hospital or university is the best plan because you will know it’s a healthy diet and it will be one designed just for you!
The bottom line is, whatever diet you can stick with the longest is the best one. Fad diet plans with restrictive intakes that promise results that are “too good to be true” are tough to stay with for longer than a few days and usually lacking in several nutrients. Any diet that has at least 1400 calories and incorporates enough nutrients to keep you healthy (meaning, choices that include vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber with a balance of carbohydrates and healthy fats) is a good choice. There are many of these including South Beach, Weight Watchers, The Zone, prepackaged drinks and bar diets like Slimfast and Jenny Craig, just to name a few. Virtually any plan you come up with yourself that cuts about 500 calories out of your current diet (limiting empty calorie foods like sodas and desserts) and increases the calories you burn through moderate exercise will lead you to a gradual weight loss. The easier your plan is to stick with, the more likely you will be successful and even maintain your loss for a long time afterwards.
