ATD: Healthy Diet for Wrestlers

Question:

What is a healthy diet a wrestler should be eating?  Sarah

Answer:

Dear Sarah,

A wrestler should be eating a well balanced diet with a variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and dairy products–just as any other athlete should…. or any other person for that matter!  With all the extra calorie-burning going on during hours a week spent wrestling, as well as in practice, more complex carbohydrates will be needed for extra energy.

One risk wrestlers run is losing too much weight–and in dangerous ways–in order to stay in their lowest weight class for the advantage in meets.  Attention should be paid to staying within a healthy weight range, and assuring plenty of fluid intake for adequate hydration.
